Falcons runners-up in home tournament19/07/2010 12:18 CulmSampford Falcons finished as runners-up in their own tournament on Saturday. Magelake provided a superb venue with eleven sides contesting the Under-12 age group in two divisions, one of six and one of five.
Falcons began the tournament losing 1-0 to Brixington Blues and then were held 1-1 by Honiton Town A with Lewis Hill netting before getting their first win with a 1-0 success over Staplegrove when Oliver Elsworthy provided the assist and Hill the finish. Next up they beat Pinhoe Spartans 2-0 with goals from Oliver Elsworthy and Philip Andrew, before ending their group games, as they started them, with a single goal defeat, this time at the hands of Alphington.
The quarter final with Ottery St Mary ended 1-1 with Oliver Elsworthy scoring a stunning goal to level things up. Extra time could not separate the sides and so it went to penalties. Tom Mortiboys, William Birley and Oliver Elsworthy stoked their sport kicks home whilst Jordan Biss made a stunning save to keep out one of the Otters efforts and so Falcons progressed to the last four.
There they faced Staplegrove who they beat 1-0 thanks to a goal from Lewis Hill although it needed a superb stop from glovesman Biss to deny the opposition in what proved to be the final action of the game.
The final proved a game too far as Alphington scored three minutes in and doubled their tally three minutes form the end to seal a 2-0 win.
On the day Tom Mortiboys was one of the stand-out players as a make-shift defender. The club’s leading goal scorer last season was pressed into defensive duties with Oliver Marston kept out owing to knee ligament problems. Mortiboys was outstanding and there was also another of those goals that falcons followers have become used to from the fleet footed Oliver Elsworthy as he completed a mazy dribble with a stunning strike!
There was also a CulmSampford United side on duty, and they did very well to emerge from their group before being edged out by eventual winners Alphington 2-0 in a knockout round game. Amongst the highlights to emerge from their games were a superb headed goal from Ryan Doble and a pair of goals each from Keiron fry (who, despite being a year younger than everybody else acquitted himself very well indeed) and the talented Tom Bushby. The popular Oliver Shuster-woods also got on the score sheet to cue the usual superb goal celebration!
On the day the United team scored six goals in their five games with Keiron Fry (2), Tom Bushby (2), Ryan Doble and Oliver Schuster-Woods, amongst the goals.
The two teams were:
Falcons: Jordan Biss, Philip Andrew, Tom Mortiboys, Oliver Elsworthy, Mitchell Dart, William Birley and Lewis Hill.
United: Tom Leaning, Ryan Shrewsberry, Oliver Schuster-Woods, Ryan Doble, Tom Bushby, Matty Leaney and Keiron Fry.
